George Russell Comments on Verstappen’s Title and His Own Championship Aspirations
Mercedes driver George Russell has shared his thoughts on his championship ambitions, controversially stating that Max Verstappen “should not have won the championship this year.”
Russell Ready for a Championship Fight
While Russell has yet to contend for a Formula 1 World Championship, he believes he is fully prepared for the challenge.
“Next year will be my seventh season in F1 and my fourth with Mercedes,” Russell told The Times. “I’m fully ready to take the next step and fight for the championship.”
Russell also highlighted his readiness to compete against Verstappen and compared himself to teammate Lewis Hamilton:
“I’m prepared to take on Max [Verstappen] and won’t miss an opportunity if it arises. I’ve felt ready for three years. Being teammates with one of the greatest drivers in history, if you beat Lewis [Hamilton], or challenge him for the championship, it’s like gaining 12 seasons’ worth of experience and respect.”
Reflecting on the 2024 Season
Fresh off his victory in Las Vegas, Russell reflected on the 2024 season and pointed out the failures of Verstappen’s rivals.
“Max should not have won the championship this year,” he remarked. “Other drivers made more mistakes and failed to capitalize on opportunities. We made the most of ours, and those opportunities don’t come every day.”
Russell also acknowledged the missed chances of his competitors, including Lando Norris:
“Lando had a shot this year. He might have one next year, or he might not. Nobody expected Red Bull to drop off so much. The difference with Max is that he wins every time he gets the chance, which is what his rivals failed to do.”
