2024 Formula 1 Calendar: Record-Breaking Races and Exciting Updates
The 2024 Formula 1 season is set to be a historic one, featuring a record-breaking 24 races and six Sprint events, marking the 75th running of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship. This season promises thrilling on-track action, significant logistical improvements, and steps towards a more sustainable future for motorsport.
A Revised Calendar for Sustainability and Efficiency
In an effort to reduce the sport’s carbon footprint, Formula 1 and the FIA have implemented a heavily revised calendar for 2024. This includes grouping races by region to minimize travel and logistical burdens. A notable change is the Japanese Grand Prix, which has moved from September to April, aligning with other nearby events.
2024 F1 Season Opener: Saturday Grand Prix
The 2024 season kicks off with a groundbreaking move: Saturday Grand Prix. Bahrain and Saudi Arabia will host the opening races on Saturday, continuing a trend started at the 2023 Las Vegas GP, which ended a 38-year absence of Saturday races. This adjustment accommodates Ramadan while maintaining the integrity of the racing schedule.
Sprint Events on the 2024 Formula 1 Calendar
The 2024 F1 calendar will feature six Sprint events, adding an extra layer of excitement to select Grand Prix weekends. The chosen circuits are known for promoting close racing, offering fans additional action-packed days. Here are the Sprint events for 2024:
- Debut Sprint events: China and Miami
- Returning Sprints: Brazil (4th Sprint), Austria (3rd Sprint), Austin (2nd Sprint), Qatar (2nd Sprint)
Sprint races are short, high-intensity events held over a 100km (62-mile) distance on Saturdays. They have their own qualifying sessions and offer drivers an extra opportunity to earn points and showcase their skills.

The 2025 Formula 1 calendar introduces several key differences compared to the 2024 calendar, reflecting adjustments to the schedule and venue order. Notably, the 2025 season starts with the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne on March 14-16, replacing Bahrain as the opening race. Similarly, Bahrain moves to Round 4, while Saudi Arabia shifts to Round 5, both in April. One of the consideration was respecting Ramadan in these two countries
The Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka also returns to an earlier slot as Round 3 in early April, whereas it was held later in the season up until 2023. Additionally, the 2025 calendar retains 24 races but with modified placements, such as the Belgium Grand Prix moving to late July and the Netherlands Grand Prix scheduled for the end of August.
These adjustments not only optimize logistics but also ensure a more regionally grouped schedule. Like in 2024 the Las Vegas Grand Prix remains a Saturday, followed by Qatar and Abu Dhabi to conclude the season. Both final races will profit from cooler weather temperatures in the winter season.
