FIA Explains Controversial Decision After Confusing Qatar GP
In an unusual response, the FIA issued a detailed explanation of the controversial events at the Qatar GP.
The decisions of the race direction and stewards were strongly criticized, and explanations were required following a series of controversies regarding penalties and incidents.
In the main sanction at the Qatar Grand Prix, Lando Norris was given a 10-second penalty for a deceleration violation under a double yellow flag. The double yellow flag was issued when Williams driver Alex Albon’s rear-view mirror fell in the center of the main straight.
Despite the obvious danger, neither the safety car nor the use of the virtual safety car (VSC) was chosen. The rear-view mirrors were left on the track for several laps, eventually colliding with the kicking Sauber of Valtteri Bottas. It was only after this high-speed collision, which scattered debris and resulted in punctures for Lewis Hamilton and Carlos Sainz, that the safety car was brought in.
In response to the criticism, the FIA published a report explaining its decision-making process and attempted to justify its race management, which was criticized by many observers and F1 fans.
