McLaren requests review of penalty imposed on Norris
McLaren has formally requested an investigation into the 10-second penalty imposed on Lando Norris at the Qatar Grand Prix. The decision to impose this penalty demoted Norris from 2nd to 10th place in the standings.
During the Qatar Grand Prix, Lando Norris was penalized for failing to slow down under yellow flags. The penalty cost McLaren valuable points in its battle with Ferrari for the constructors’ standings.
McLaren currently holds a 21-point lead over Ferrari, but all will be decided at next weekend’s final race in Abu Dhabi to see who will take the title.
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella claimed that the penalty “lacks specificity and proportionality” and “could have an impact” on the constructors’ standings.
Stella added, “When we review the data, we acknowledge that Lando (Norris) has not slowed down,” adding that “the lack of specificity and proportionality is a cause for great concern and could have a decisive impact on our quest for the championship.”
Stella announced a formal request to the FIA to reconsider this sanction. Stella stated, “We hope that instances of the application of such severe penalties will be considered, and we believe there is room for improvement once the FIA reviews its operations and opportunities for applying the penalties.”
